Dear Sisters and Brothers,
Last fall, as most of you know, I began asking the proclaimers of the Word to meet with me to share their thoughts on potential homilies for the upcoming Sundays. What, I asked them, were the concerns of the community which I should be addressing in the weekly homily? Attendance at those meetings has been steadily declining, and I would probably do well to look elsewhere for assistance in preparing a homily. So let me widen the consultation. Whoever you are, what concerns in your life merit consideration in a Sunday homily? I need to know, for without your input, a homily is just a stab in the dark, which may or may not hit the target.
I am not talking about planning specific homilies. Rather, I’m looking for the concerns and issues which you deal with in your lives. Relying on the readings of the day, I can try to address those concerns this summer. In an ideal world, a group of six or eight community members would meet to share ideas. A group is better than one, inasmuch as a group can be more representative of the community and can also help clarify and prioritize ideas.
If you have the time and the interest, whether you just turned ten, are pushing ninety, or find yourself somewhere in between, I would be happy to meet with you and others for an hour or so sometime over the next few weeks. Give me your name and an e-mail/telephone contact, and we can see what we can arrange. The real world is not always ideal; some of you may truly want to help but may not have the time to meet. If you want to share your thoughts with me outside of a group setting, that would still be helpful.
Peace and every blessing, Loren, OFM
