Dear Sisters and Brothers,
Next week we return to the Sundays in Ordinary Time. For the next few Sundays our second reading will be taken from Paul’s Letter to the Galatians. Galatia was a region in central Anatolia. Today’s Turkish capital of Ankara was originally a Galatian town. The people were Celts or Gauls—notice the consistent consonants C/G-L-T—who moved eastward into Asia Minor as their contemporaries moved westward into those lands which we now call France, Britain, and Ireland. Paul wrote to the largely gentile church in Galatia to strengthen them in their struggle with those who were insisting that gentile Christians observe the entire Mosaic law. At times Paul’s language gets pretty heated as he develops an impassioned plea for Christian freedom.
This year’s principal reading, of course, is not Galatians but Luke. As I’ve noted before, Luke is probably the most intentional of the four evangelists. Time and place uniquely define this gospel. We saw the temporal dimension back in January when Luke presented Jesus’ ministry as one Spirit-filled year of favor from our God. This summer and fall we shall see the spatial dimension as Luke presents Jesus’ journey to Jerusalem and the ultimate fulfillment of God’s plan in the holy city. Are we ready to experience a year of favor from our God? Are we ready to experience the fulfillment of God’s plan in our lives?
Peace and every blessing, Loren, OFM
